Hi all,

I've noticed a lil problem with my beloved. She's blowing smoke and using a hell of a lot of oil compared to usual. With the smoke at first it was just when the engine was warm but I just started her up before for the first time today and she did it then.

Keeping in mind this motor has only done around 30 000 kms and never been put on a track. I had her serviced around 6 weeks ago, and she'd pretty much used all her engine oil when I checked on Thursday.

Previously she's hardly used any oil at all, maybe one top up in 6 months.

any ideas?

on a side note, I need to go buy some more oil, what is the general consensus to use for a 2 litre?

Given that the motor should still be reasonably fresh, I'll take first guess and say its probably just valve guide seals?

As in, you started it and it blew a cloud of blue smoke before it cleared up a bit? This would seem consistent with worn seals, as the oil in the top of the head would have time to run down onto the pistons overnight, and then when you start it up it gets burnt?

You will need an answer from someone who actually knows what they are talking about though.

Get a compression test done.
Irrespective of the mileage, it could have sticking or damaged rings.

My Fiat once developed a hole in no.2 cylinder at 12K miles and they were quality German Mahle pistons too.

Valve guide seals no 1 suspect but...if the car has been sitting around for a time and not used, there could be pitting corrosion in the linings that will cause blow by etc. A compression test should help with the diagnosis.

Experiment with Penrite HPR30 to start with after you have done the above services.
