Outboards are for poofs.

Why thank you sir.  Care to bend over for a while?  You know you want to join the club...

Apologies it was not meant to be an attack by any stretch, I have had enough experience with the hastle of adjust rear callipers that I will put my hand up as one of the whining people.

For information's sake, 105 ate rear callipers are what I am referring to.
However i do believe that my original post was of a technical nature, as it is a solution to PART of the hastle of the design of these inboard brakes.

i have also seen the adjustable de-dion that Paul is refering to, it is actually still available for purchase from a german company, see

when going to outboard brakes,
what rotor do you guys use? im thinking i will find a rotor that fits over the rear hub and has a good offset and drill 4x98 and let the wheel hold the rotor on.
i have volvo 4 pots on the front with volvo rotors, should i use gtv6/75/90 front calipers on the rear?
Cheers, Brad

I hate inboard brakes, tried to change pads on mine today and had all sorts of dramas....shouldn't be this hard >:(

I agree with Phil, it is an utter pain to change rear pads.  Has anyone other than MD cut holes in the boot in order to access the rear brakes?  Has anone got any pictures of this type of access set-up?  I'm thinking of doing this and any advice/experience that people have would be helpful.

I found the double jointed elbows and wrists I developed came in quite handy....Oh, and the extra hand.

PS: The best thing about the Sud inboard front brakes is the looks your front wheels get ( my car has fairly open design 8 spoke TSW 14" rims) when the car alongside in stop/start traffic cant see any front brakes!  Almost makes it enjoyable!! ;D

Hey Paul. Your psychiatric report is in. If you want a copy, send me a PM,hahaa.

Nigel, when you got 300mm rear vented rotors you only have one choice-an inspection plate above the calipers otherwise you have to remove the calipers to get the pads out !!

Naturally this depends on where the caliper is located to start with on the transaxle. In hind sight, I would not place them there again even if I did put them inboard. Like they say, it seemed like a good idea at the time..

I know what you mean, my 75TS had open design 16inch TSW rims, I used to get asked about the absence of rear brakes quite often from non alfa people, had a bit of fun with this as depending on who it was and how switched on they were my responses would range from "yeah it's an 88 model so Alfa deleted the rear brakes as a cost cutting exercise" to "really you serious?, could've of sworn they were there this morning".

Far as I know the bloke that bought the car off me converted to outboard brakes as it became a track car, and yes inboards are a pain in the arse to change as is the sticking handbrake that seemed to affect my 75

I recognise that car.  Yes the subsequent owner did convert to outboards, and I think Commodore brakes at the front.  I believe the car is still in the club with yet another owner (would love to know how he got a RWC with a changed brake location....)

pep105

Yes it was for sale earlier this year and I do recall it having Commodore front brakes. Interesting point you raise about the RWC Sheldon, unless the road worthy inspector saw nothing abnormal about a 75 with outboards ?

Yes, it has Commodore front brake calipers *on the outboard rear Mercedes rotors* iirc (I was looking at buying it).
