Hey you guys in the knowledge, I have just found out first hand this afternoon what I have been missing out on.  I have no idea how this model Alfa had escaped me for so long, but finally thanks to Alex I have managed to have a drive of an Alfetta GTV6.  Farwwwk what an engine note, what tunnel it makes when given a some stick in second and third gear going under an underpass and up a hill.  Bloody awesome.

That 2.5 V6 is definitely one of the most exotic notes you can experience on wheels.  It turns heads, but thankfully not the boys in blue, as I was good when we went past them.

Damn, now I really want one.  So I suppose I am going to have to find a way somehow to make it happen.  I know there are examples around, but firstly I am going to have save some $$ and then figure out how to not incur the wrath the wifey.  Hmn, the second part being the trickier ultimately of the two minor glitches to this desire.

LOL. Wish you all the best there David.

A possible solution to your problem might come in the form of a 75 3/2.5 ltr.

Keep saying "but its a family car sweet heart, it has 4 doors !!!" ; )

My father owns a black 3ltr 75 and what a freaking MONSTER it is. I personally think these are THE most aggressive Alfa's ever made.

Thanks Brett  ;D and yes I know what you mean.  I am even wondering if I were perhaps to sell the 1750 GTV, whether that might be a way to placate her.  You know, something along the lines of hey babe, you know that white GTV of mine which just sits in the garage not being used and waiting to be restored, well how about I sell it, and then say replace it with a newer toy, and one which needs less $ spent on it bringing it up to scratch.

Hmn I wonder if I could get away with this. I mean I love the GTV, but I still have my 105 Giulia Super and I guess there are enough 105 GTVs out there to have another one in the future.

I suspect I couldn't get away with the idea of buying a 'V6 75 or 90, given I already have my daily driver 156 and she has her BMW 3 series, so another sedan hmn I don't think so.  I do know what you mean re value for $$ though.

Oh well problems to ponder I think.

My fiance has no issues with me buying cheap cars and spending time and a little money on them. It's better than burning it all up at a pub somewhere and she sees the enjoyment I get out of it. Ask her to cut back on something she loves if she has  ago at you, at least a car you can sell on and recoup some money!

Regards, Andrew.

It's not so much the car as it is the mechanicals. Shoehorn all this stuff into a GTV6 and it becomes the best transaxle (road car) Alfa didn't make and at the end of it, it looks like a sports car should .

David, the 2.5V6 is a lovely engine and yes the noise is unique but the power to haul ass above a good 2 litre donk is not that impressive. Step up only another 500cc and the difference is huge. Three litre engines in the GTV6 are the perfect balance between power and weight. Admittedly you cannot just leave it there, all the mechanicals must be matched to suit the upgrade to provide the balance that Alfas have.

If you really want to get the GTV6 bug, go for a drive in a 3 litre one or come up for holidays to Brisbane and I'll lend you mine.. ;D

..er best of luck at the SPAM sink mate.. ;)

Your as good as screwed now since you've driven one because your smitten, and your talking crazy talk like a man blinded buy love (or lust?) saying you want to sell the 1750 !

I can understand your desire that engine is a delight, but I refer to a discussion on an earlier thread started by you on the same subject.

Thanks Pep and MD. Err yes possibly a moment of insanity there, lust absolutely.  I probably should have got my left foot out of my mouth before offering such heresay in suggesting I could perhaps sell the 1750GTV.

I knew I could count on you Pep to bring me back to ground in remembering the previous thread on such matters.  And yes you are absolutely correct, I knew I would be in trouble the moment I accepted the offer to take the 6 for a drive.  Bugger !!!  I am totally screwed now.  As I said it was an Alfa that somehow had always bypassed me, and hence I didn't realise what it was really like.

MD you are correct on all accounts, from my extremely limited experience.  I gathered that while the 2.5 is no power house the sound is glorious.  On the other hand, a 3L (ie. say from a 164 or 75) would be more exilerating.  From your experience is there a significant difference in engine note between the two. I mean to say I know some guys have installed 3.2 quadcam GTA motors and then some (eg. increased the power output up to 3.8L).  Where do you stop though ???

I mean it is hard when Greg (Redalfaracing) PMs me letting me know he has a spare GTV6 that might be for sale, the guy whose 6 I took for a drive just had to tell me of another car locally that he knew of which is for sale and not too much $$.

The bikkie tin is looking pretty depleted at the moment, but you never know, where there is a desire there is a way.  It will happen sometime, and when it does I will be as happy as a pig in sh**t

Hi David,

I'm with you on this one,  I had a 1750 gtv which I loved,  and then an 85 GTV6 with ansa extractors - the domain tunnel,  windows down .....  it just never got old.

I only sold the GTV6 because the duetto came up,  and now the super has my attention,  but I miss that V6 howl on the on-ramps.

I ended up making a megasquirt injection computer for it - tired of the ageing L-Jet components starting to play up...   That really sorted the car for me.   I never got around to tightening up the suspension so she was a bit of a boat in the narrow inner-city, roundabouts etc - you really had to work to keep up with a nice 105 or 2l alfetta  - but on the freeway or mountain roads - bliss.

Have I mentioned the Howl ?

I'd definitely revisit one again - and per the thread,  3.0 24V transplant, LSD etc :)

Cheers,
Scott

Yeah David, even though my favourite Alfas are transaxles..this is going to hurt a bit..er I do have a soft spot for the 105 gear as I have  owned them it in past.

Choices, choices let's see now. Let the 1750 go,score a GTV6 instead. Is this financially a winner? Hmm. A hard call. Both cars are getting older, they both need maintenance.Resale potential well, there are strong support camps for both. In the 105 camp there has always been a subgroup who preferred the 1750 to the 2 litre engine and so the model doesn't really suffer any marketing downside from my viewpoint. The V6 will be more expensive to recondition than the inline four but it will last longer as it is less stressed and so at the end the day they are comparable in some respect.

As for the sound of the 2.5 compared with the 3.0 12v, it's a bit like this this. They are the same engine one having a 500cc larger capacity. It therefore stands to reason that the sound will be similar which it is. It's first thing that popped into my head after the conversion. To me it sounds just as tough with a bit more aggression and urgency
and when the power poles start whizzing past a lot quicker than usual, you understand that it is not just the noise that matters. This sucker means business.

People say you can never have enough power to which I say that is a load of ill conceived piffle. It's a bout a balance. Based on its weight, 200 -225 bhp makes for a cracker of a road sports car.

I don't think you could describe that any better. I have had a 3.0L in for 18 months now and it has been awesome! All GTV6's should of came out of the factory with 3.0L's, power steering and a twin spark gear box. This would make them even MORE desirable!
