Any Brisbanites out there know of where I could take a stripped block to get a thorough cleaning? I've given it a bit of a toothbrush scrub but would like it to look its best in the freshly painted engine bay. Wetblasting, Ultrasonic? Experience and price info would be much apprecatiated!

There's a bloke the bike guys use, Specialised Blasting Services, http://www.freewebs.com/blasting/

Thanks Ben, I will give him a call. I suspect he may be pricey for a car engine by the looks of his work, which looks exceptional.

Your other alternative is the sodablast mob I used for a bike cylinder head - I'll dig their number up for you tomorrow - they picked up the head, blasted it (aircooled 4cyl bike head, so lots of fins/nooks/crannies) and delivered it back for $120 or so - came up pretty clean, I suspect it would be a better job on something with less fins like the alfa block.

Thanks Ben, they sound good. Have a good NY and I hope we both get our projects on the road in 2011!

Great! I'll give them a buzz and see what they have to say.

Well these guys sound like they are priced to my liking :) It should be about $100. Now to finish stripping the block. Can I leave the liners in?

mate, there is no way i would be blasting my engine block. take it to chilton's engineering at wooloongabba. i get all my engine parts dipped there and they come up like new. it doesn't blast away at the original surface and you don't have to worry about left over media in the knooks and crannies.
cheers, cameron.

Thanks for the referal Cameron. I thought soda blasting was actually very gentle? If rinsed and neutralized after it is meant to be very safe?

LaStregaNera

Soda blasting is fine, so is the wet grit blasting that Specialised Blasting Services do.
You can probably leave the liners in, but I'd pull them.

Old thread now..but anyway...  The guys at MT Autos just hot-washed my Alfa head and it came up nice and clean.  $25 or so later...
