i just read a recent topic on 2l oil catch cans in the for sale section of the forum. I am a bit of a newchum to engines and am presently looking at my own 2l berlina engine which has a rubber tube exiting from the front rt side of the valve cover. After a couple of bends it drops down thw back of the engine and just vents to the air. Is it supposed to have some sort of catch can in there somewhere like is mentioned on the above thread or is it ok to just have it as it appears on my old engine? i will need to track down a new hose as the old one is badly perished so any advice and ideas will be welcomed please.
Thanks in advance
Mickl

On a stock intake - there's a fitting on the air cleaner for a short 90deg. bent hose to run from the cam cover. So the Oil vapor is sucked in with the air and burnt in the engine (perhaps also lubricating the carb spindles... who knows ;)

If your intake isn't stock and doesn't have anywhere to plumb that vapor tube in - a catch can might be a less emissive way of controlling the vapor, rather than venting under the car the way the older cars do.

Thankyou once again for this good info.....it is a stock air cleaner with  a short pipe inlet and a short 90 degree bent hose should connect the two. The previous owner must have disconnected the original hose and installed a different one for some reason. i will slip down to rare spares later this week to see if they can give me something to fit. Should there be some sort of fine mesh filter in the line before the oiled vapour gets to the air filter box?

I've seen some with a coarse mesh at the mouth of the fitting on the air filter - and some without...   The mesh I recall was more a 'keep nails and things out' rather than a fine steel wool condensing / flametrap style mesh.    I think the old Alloy intake box with the crossover hose on the Duetto actually had a coarse mesh on it too....

I have a barrel and a crossover intake in the shed - I'll have a look and see (unless someone else knows for sure ? )

I do know peeps would disconnect the breather and run it out to ground somewhere to try and reduce the smokiness of older engines with loads of blow-by... or reduce the oil vapour to fuel to air ratio for *more power*  :)    perhaps that was the aim of the PO.

Thanks once again. I have just connected the hose to the air cleaner box without any mesh as i can`t see any coarse metal pieces getting in there. I also had a look at my 260z and followed the hose from it and sure enough it too just vents to air down below the back of the engine and out of sight of any pink slip inspector.
Scott, on a follow up from your previous help with brakes, i will probably need to get the lockhheed vac assists refurbished at an approx quote of $600 each or poss get some brand new vh44 units at about $420 each and do a bit of fiddling with mounting brackets. I read that the vh44 units were used on drum brake cars and maybe the vh40 units might be better for the discs. Do you have any views on this?

Hi Mate,

The blue 1750 GTV I've been driving while the Super was coming up to scratch has a pair of VH40-AJ-2  units mounted in much the same alignment as the dual Bonaldi / Benditalia boosters you see on these cars all the time.   The VH40's in this car provide a great feel for the brakes,  and I actually prefer them to the lower assist given by the Bonaldi units with smaller dia. diaphragms.   The car still has great feel on the edge as far as *my* performance envelope goes :)    The car definitely doesn't feel 'overboosted'    Perhaps others who've had a chance to compare both might chip in.  I've never tried the Lockheed gear.

You might try Milano / Monza et al and see if they have a pair of the VH's floating around you can buy cheap and have rebuilt at your local guy.  I know I've seen crates full of asst. boosters out at Milano's anyway.  I'll probably go down that route when the Bonaldi in the Super dies.

Once important point - the GTV in question has had 3 dual circuit master cylinders in the last 15 years - but is still running the same VH40 boosters that were fitted some time before that.

If you want a pic of the VH40 boosters in the engine bay to see what they look like - let me know.

Cheers,
Scott

Hello MD and others and thanks for the posts in response to my questions.
Yes, good idea, I will repost the replies on the brakes issue under a brake heading if i can work out how to do it!
Thanks
