Smellly GTV6 - Troubleshooting tip

Hi Guys

Had some petrol smell coming form the GTV6 yesterday. Now I have a decent nose on me (part of a family trait) but it's not directional so difficult to pickup where the "leak" was coming from.

So how do we check for leaks - a GTV6 makes lots of racket so listening is not the best while the engine is running and I've already said my nose can pickup a barby lamb chop from half a K away but i can't pick the direction.

So going on my previous experience fixing the FI system on the Beast I had a brain wave.

Ignition on - cover for the Air Flow Meter off, turn the vane, contacts open and Voila, fuel pump runs and the system is at pressure.

Now the system runs apparently at around 35PSI so there will be fuel noise.

Didnt take more than a second or two to hear ( and then feel)  that there was a loose pipe on top of the pressure regulator/return pipe.

So if you are troubleshooting, run your hands around connections, give them a wobble and see if you get differnet noises etc and this should help you isolate a weak spot.

Killed the pump, tightened it up and the extra noise was gone. As I said 35PSI in the system so you will hear fuel noise. Apparently the theory being that if plenty of fuel flows through the system, it keeps a supply of cool fuel to the engine, and this stops erratic behavoir in hot conditions.

Anyway, thought this may help someone else :-)

Absolulely Choderboy. Having said that standard safety would apply. - probably best to do on a cold engine.

If things are going to leak with some manual movement, it wont be long before they break free under the rattle and hum of working a GTV6 through the hills.

Not sure if this procedure would work on a 75 - not fully across their wiring.
