Why does painting it black prevent it from scraping on the ground?

I have now re-written that sentence...

Here is a photo of a different way of doing it.

With mine, the Y-joint occurred in front of the axle, and the pipes were threaded through the suspension arms, with straightish pipe through to each pair of tips

Actually the one on the LHS doesn't have quite enough clearance so I may have to return and get it shaped a bit further away from the suspension arm.
