Hi all i recenlty noticed why my drivers side door wasnt closing, the door hinge spacers are missing.
It has alot of play .The passenger side has them.
The question i have is
Where do you buy them?what size are they?
Can i use just standard washers around the door pin hinge?
Cheers

They are not washes, they are brass (or plastic depending on the year) bushes with a flange on the top surface. They tipically wear out, cause the dooes to drop, get sloppy, and ultimately allow the door to open too far and put a crease in the front gaurd (big expense). The bushes can be purchased from a variety of sources or can be turned downed by a reasonable engineer. The hinge needs to be removed from the door without damaging the door and the new bushes pressed in and then the hinge pin reistated.

Or alternatively, he might be talking about washers fitted as spacers under the hinges. If you don't have them, they weren't fitted. They used to adjust the door fitment though, and if your doors don't shut easily, you need to look into why they don't. Don't assume that you  need them. My driver-side door needed negative-one(!) washer to shut properly, which was finally diagnosed and fixed (after 20 years of difficult closing)  by Corrado Mauceri - thanks Corrado!

Not sure which piece you are having trouble with...
1 The b pillar where the latch is fitted has three allen key head screws attaching the latch pin and each screw has a washer acting as a shim between the pillar and the latch. You can move the latch pin fitting around a bit to get a good close on the door ...but these washers would not fall out unless you had removed the latch fitting.
2 The door hinges fit to the A pillar with 3 nuts on the bottom hinge and 2 on the top (as i recall). These nuts can be loosened after removing the kick panel but the top nuts are still pretty difficult to access still. These hinges have shaped shims between the hinge body and the A pillar and are used to get the door gaps to fit correctly. You may have lost a shim if the nuts have come loose but I think this is unlikely. If this appears to be the problem you could easily get some made yourself from some sheet metal and take the pattern from any existing ones. i may have a sample of each if you need to get the pattern.
3 If the problem is in the pin itself then Gary Pearce may be on the money. my hinge pins do not look very easy to remove ...i think they are welded in  but may be wrong??
Best of luck

Mr Frog

My driver side door is severely sagged. I recently had the hinges repaired, and aftrer reading this and other threads I am suspicious now about what was actually done. I cannot see the brass bushes from the top or the bottom of either hinge, so am assuming that they are fitted from the middle of the hinge - is that correct?

Also, if shaped shims are fitted between the A pillar and the hinges, then they would probably be essential for correct alignment of the door - is that correct?

Mickl, I have looked on both the alfaholics site and the classic alfa site and these shims are not listed. can you send me the pattern you are talking about p;lease?

Hi Mr Toad
Will post a top shim and the outline of a bottom shim to you Monday.
You can easily make up some or get a sheet metal place to cut some for you. I have about 4 on the top of the drivers door to get a decent fit!
Hope they get you out of trouble.

Mr Frog

very much appreciated thanks Mickl.
