RACV Batteries has been supplying and installing batteries to stranded RACV members for the past 16 years and recycles over 100,000 batteries annually. Spent batteries are taken to Australian Refined Alloy's in Laverton and recycled under strict environmental controls. The lead acid battery tops the list of the most highly recycled consumer product. 96% of a battery is recyclable and the components can be reused in making new batteries.

After the success of last year, RACV Batteries is again holding the Great Battery Round Up. On Saturday 6 October 2007, members of the public are encouraged to bring their old automotive batteries to participating RACV Service Centres in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. All batteries collected will be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. This is a great opportunity to responsibly dispose of any old automotive batteries you have lying around in your garage, shed or garden whilst also helping the environment. For each battery you bring along on the day, RACV Batteries will donate $5.00 to The Royal Children's Hospital.

how to safely handle batteries
We suggest you:

Keep batteries in an upright position and place in a sturdy container for transporting.
Avoid smoking near or exposing batteries to an open flame.
Switch off your car engine while unloading.
Wear gloves and safety glasses while handling batteries.

Nice - I've got a couple of dead batteries in the garage taking up space.  There's $10 for the kiddies.
