Hey Chris do you mean those were the days when you could do 140MPH on the open road??? or drive a GTHO before they became absurdly expensive ??

Mind you if I were going to do those sorts of speeds on the open road in off the floor 4 sedan I think I would prefer a 6.3 W108 300 Mercedes.  But perhaps that is just me  ;D ;D

Those were the days when you could do both and wind up upside down like my attachment ...:)

Agree about the Benz.

My dad had metallic green 300SEL 6.3 from '70 to '72. It could REALLY go but the roads from Sydney to Thredbo were hopeless, we continously damaged exhaust systems and headlight lenses, the variable height suspension came in handy a few times fording swollen creeks on the Humes south of Canberra.

Quite a few years ago I nearly bought a 1979 W116 450SEL 6.9 but a Mercedes mechanic friend of mine warned me off. It had done about 300,000km, the air suspension needed major work and the engine blew smoke under power - otherwise it, so the dealer said, it was 'OK'. Even in that condition it went like stink, but didn't corner very well.

Heh heh guys, I have been tempted to buy my brother's black 3.5 w108, a little easier to live with than the 6.3 (not quite as thirsty for one thing), and it even has a sunroof, the merc mags etc. Nice cars (always liked the shape) and for sure the 6.3 was a rocket for its time.

Mind you said brother has a rather large collection (lost count how many) of 60s Merc sedans, plus a coupe and a pagoda roof, and that is on top of Lancia's, Alfas and Fiats, Jags etc.
