Hi All,

I'm new to Alfa Romeos and New to this forum.

I recently bought a damaged 2005 147 Selespeed, it has a small hit on the front (bonnet, passenger side) I was really keen to get it started and drive it around for repairs.

It starts fine, however then an error appears saying Selespeed system failure and the it's stuck in N. Can't change to first gear or R.

I had a quick look at the oil and water etc, doesn't look like its got much engine oil however no engine or oil light is on.

Just wondering if anyone was able to give some advice on the best/cheapest way to get the issue diagnosed? I'm out west in VIC and don't really want to have to Tow it around to repairs if its too far.

Also i noticed the date was reset to the year 2000.

Any help / advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks :)

Crikey, you enjoy a challenge.

It needs to be diagnosed by someone who knows the car for the right advice.  Besides the damage, the car requires some mechanical work.  Big question too -When was the timing belt changed ?

I would say go to any of the Alfa Specialist workshops that are an alternative to the dealer network if so so desire. They all have a modern vehicle analyser or Alfa factory analyser. Most workshops are club sponsors and give real value to club members. You said the west Vic so I assume rural -the Alfa dealer in Ballarat may be the closest or the Alfa service centre in Geelong. Some are club sponsors and give real value to club members.  If in western suburbs check our sposnsors and advertisers.

The bottom line is that the car (vis. selespeed) need to be taken somewhere for a diagnostic check to determine the extent of what needs replacing or if you are lucky - resetting.  Other people on the forum will give more precise mechanical guidance.

Note, If I had a selespeed, I would immediately sign up for RACV roadside assistance as the free tow means that it is not a real problem where they take it.

After that decision, the real issue down the line is what you decide to replace , the cost of new or reconditioned parts and when it needs to be done.

By the way use the right oil and fill her us straight away or you will damage the motor - its a common European thing  as the engines are unforgiving. Make sure it is fully synthetic as per the book.

On the forum, the bottom line often said is get the car serviced by someone who knows the cars -and enjoy the Alfa experience on roads that the car was meant to be driven on !

You say that it did not have much engine oil, this is a bad sign, if the engine oil level drops to min, then these engines will suffer from oil starvation, and you will need to have the engine taken out and repaired, and the 147 twin sparks oil is 10-40 fully synthetic race oil, have a look on the front radiator support where all the lubricants are displayed, the selespeed fault could be a dud sensor or just needs an adjustment, for the average service place, they wouldn't have a clue, take it to one of our club sponsors that work on these all the time and they will know what the problem is and how to fix it, look on the main page to see who the club service providers are, the cam belts in these have to be changed every 3-4 years or 50,000-60,000 klms, depending the types of conditions the car is used under, Colin.

Hey zayed, let us know how you get on, so we all learn a bit more about our cars, remember what Clarkson from Top Gear always states, you are not a true petrol head until you have owned an Alfa Romeo, Colin.

Hi Guys,

Got an Auto Electrician to look at it for me, came up with the following error codes:
P1762, P1770, P1746, P1752, P1745

The concerning one is P1752, this one could not be reset.

Any ideas what this fault code could be related to?

ANG156

P would relate the powertrain ie engine, gearbox.

You can do search online to find what p1752 means or look at this link i found for you http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-147-156-and-gt/259968-selespeed-pump-not-priming.html.

It seems p1752 relates to the selespeed pump relay. If its only a relay then no big deal easy to replace with a new one or second hand. BTW who was your auto elec?

dehne

first things first, are you getting power to the pump, use a test light to check but a volt meter is better, if there is no power could just be a fuse, i had recently had that happen to me, if there is power it is more likely to be a pump issue, and the best place to get it is from bruno at maranellos, best price and a warranty,
let us know how this goes if problems persist please see a alfa doctor,

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. I swapped the relay from the fuse box in front of the battery to the fuse box on the left of it, that didn't fix it.

It sounds like the pump is running because i did hear a small noise towards the passenger side when the front door was open.

I'm thinking now it may be that the pump isn't generating enough pressure or is fualty in someway.

May have to take this to someone for a look.

Thanks All

when you open the drivers door the car does make a noise put not nessasarily the pump working, you need to check that ur getting power to the pump this needs to be you first port of call, i know with the 156 there is a relay at the front of the battery, but there is also a fuse at the back of vthe battery that control the pump.

I'm going to try with a voltmeter, where does it need to be placed to test it? On the pump relay?

With this model there are fuses and relays in front of the battery then there is also the pump relay to the left of the battery.

I swapped over the relay with one exactly the same from the fuse box but no success, so don't think it's the relay its self.

How does power get to the pump?

Thanks

zayed85

Thanks Guys.

Looks like power is flowing to the pump put a voltmeter through the pump wiring (where the relay sits and it read 12 volts. Also used a light pen and it lit up.

then its the pump, if there is power to it and it does not work

Thanks.

Know any alfa specialists out west?

Tried maranellos yesterday, couldn't get anyone on the phone to talk about the problem and book it in.

If the whole pump needs replacing approximately how much do you think it will cost?

Thanks

Joe Garra

I'm in Werribee, as far west as you can get :-), and I use Maranello's. Try them again.
