Latitude: Directions for Young People (Latitude) is a Homelessness Assistance Program funded by the Department of Human Services.  Our target group are young people 15 – 25yrs who are at risk of or are experiencing homelessness. Latitude provides support and linkages in order to assist young people experiencing homelessness to reconnect to the community; we also provide support to divert young people away from the homelessness sector wherever possible.  We service the Cities of Hobson's Bay & Moonee Valley.
Many of the young people Latitude works with are extremely disengaged and present with a broad range of issues eg; mental health, substance issues, criminal behaviors, abuse etc
Latitude is a small community based agency.  We are managed by a volunteer Committee of Management and operate on the proverbial shoestring.
Every year Latitude has a Christmas Party for the young people accessing our services.  Christmas is an extremely difficult time for our young people as it can be difficult to separate Christmas from Families.  Very few of our young people have positive (or any) relationships with family members, so it is a lonely and sad time. A lot try to avoid it altogether.
The Christmas party of course involves Santa!  Each year we try to make his arrival special, we have received fantastic support from a variety of organizations/individuals/clubs.  For example Santa has arrived by boat, Harley, corvette, street rod & prime mover!
Is it at all possible for Santa to arrive in one your member's rather flash vehicles?
We would be looking at 12.45pm – 2pm max, pick up from our office in Somers Parade Altona to Logan's Reserve Altona and return.  We would also like to be able to maybe tinsel you up!!!
Some of our young people are parents, the children are well catered for, it is the young people inclusive of our young parents who we target Santa's arrival at.  Often they have not had the chance to celebrate the joy of being young; being homeless is hard work. So it is this time of year that we do something that is fun, not focusing on dealing with their issues, just fun. That's why the big guys transport is important and we try to make special.
Difficult to know how many of our young people will attend, it's not massive but it's meaningful.
