Another Selespeed bites the dust

How do you know it was the Selespeed?, could have been a cambelt or crank sensor, but law of averages says it most likely was, i was talking to a 147 owner the other day, and he reckons Alfa Romeo could sell twice as many cars if they had a conventional Automatic with a torque convertor, kind of agree with that, Colin.

Today, I have just spent a a lovely afternoon being chauffeured around by my daughter ( I can't get in & out of Chadstone Shopping centre without help) in her 147 selespeed thinking what a great  little car it is.

I can recall the profound dissappointment when the first Selespeeds arrived back in '99.  I guess we can excuse Alfa given they were  breaking new ground with a mass produced automated manual but the expectations were very high, not just from the marketing hype but because Alfa had produced such as great car in the 156.  

Several members of the club bought some of the first ones to arrive and more than one reported problems, from being stuck in a particular gear to failed actuators at very low km's.  My father still has one of those early button shift cars, which he bought 2nd hand several years ago, and while he hasn't had any problems I certainly wouldn't buy one over a manual.

Sorry Gully. The subject should have read "Warning: Images may be disturbing to some viewers". I'm kicking myself that I didn't get a photo of the police blocking the entire West flow of traffic while the truck manoeuvred the car onto the tray.

Colin, have you ever smelt Selespeed fluid? It stinks. Autos Schmortos I reckon.

mmm, thinking about it it looks more of a gearbox prob, not the actual sele unit as any part that uses selespeed oil
hope this makes some sort of sence, as the amount of sele fluid is only about 300ml

Didn't notice the gearbox fluid on the road, but then again, i am not very observent, that amount of fluid, looks like it selected 2 gears at once and punched one out the case, wonder where the 147 ended up, anyone seen at one of our workshops?, Colin.

i agree dehne, it can't be all sele fluid, the full capacity of the system is 600ml.

agree, I occasionally deliver babies and 300ml of blood makes quite a large puddle
