can anyone with a bit of knowledge with the wiring on these cars (83 gtv) confirm that the light green wire that runs along the top of the firewall and down to the passanger front side goes to the alternator?

long story short the alternator caused the main power and its surrounding wires from the alternator to starter / firewall to melt. and im replacing the burnt wires with some from a 85 gtv. the 83 gtv harness has a light green and dark green at the firewall, the alternator is light green but the 85 harness only has 1 dark green wire, is it possible that the colors changed throuought the years? or am i better off getting a harness that is from the same year?

cheers, Brad

Brad,

1983 GTV6 definitely has green going to alternator. Never come across light and dark green it 's green and green with a stripe. that's not to say there isn't different shades of single colour green.

Yes the colours do fade in that area. I spent a frustrating hour trying to trace coloured wire that came through from the headlights to near the alternator. Went under the loom wrapping coloured (can't remember which colour) but I eventually worked out it had faded to white when it came out from under the wrapping near heat.

Thanks Al, problem fixed, got it running! But since I've taken the dash out the indicators don't work properly because the hazard button was taken out without noting wire positions. Does anyone have a drawing / diagram of where each wire goes on this unit? Cheers brad

Cool Jesus

Brad, I agree that this forum is full of fantastic info and helpful members, but after having owned 9 Alfas you don't even have a pdf manual? OK then, you've sucked me in, I'll see what I can find unless someone else beats me to it... 8)

Brad,

Easy if you get some wiring diagrams for your car, then it's easy to trace things and work it out.

I do have scanned diagrams for my 1983 GTV-6, Which is the later dash layout with out the central tacho binnacle, so it might be different to your 4 cyl. I could P.M. them to you, but it would be much better to get ones you know are right.  If no Aussie on this forum chimes in, you will almost certainly be able to source soft copies from the American BB, which has a specific section just for wiring;
