Cooked Engine in '06 159 2.4 JTD

A friend of mine cooked the engine in her '06 159 2.4 JTD after the water pump failed whilst climbing a mountain. Her
mechanic has replaced the water pump, belts etc and was hoping for the best, but it looks like the motor is completely
stuffed. He recommends sourcing a replacement as he reckons it will be cheaper than a rebuild.

Thought I might check in with the experts. Does anyone know where she might be able to source a reasonably priced
used replacement. BTW she is in Brisbane.. but I guess we could look at freight etc.

Cheers guru's. Stubbers

Sorry to hear about the 159, have a look on the ebay site for 159's, and anyone who is wrecking one, ask them a few questions such as warranty, klms the engine has done, whether it is complete, or has the alternator, aircon compressor, power steering pump etc on it or not, what the freight is, and if in your state, how much to fit it, as dismantlers fit engines too, the water pump is a known issue on these engines, should be changed with a cam belt change, as they seize up, overheat the car, and wear the timing belt out, Colin.

I'd thought when the water pump failed on a 2.4 it (usually) seizes causing the cam belt to break and all sorts of associated issues with rocker arms/lifters etc ?

Ancillaries should be fine.

I'd be getting one from the UK as they're plentiful and cheap (check eBay UK), freight doesn't neccesarily have to be expensive. This would mean no recourse for warranty though

It depends on what happened, if the water pump failed and cooked the engine, get another second hand motor, if the water pump seized and the cambelt failed, then the rockers break, and all the rollers fall out and end up in the sump, so you have to remove the sump to fish out all the rollers that have fallen out, failure to remove rollers will result in engine failure down the track, Colin.

Hi everybody, I am new on this forum. Hope everybody is doing well. In regards to the 2.4 Jtd being cooked. It is a worry!
I have heard of it before, I did mention it to Angelo at Zegame. He assured me that it is not common, but you need to do the timing belt when recommended.
In some cases, if you hear a rattling noise from your engine it probably is your water pump. You ought to attend to it immediately.
Also, I own an Alfa Spider which does not get driven much, An average of once every two weeks. I heard that if you are a member of the Alfa Club, you are eligible for a minimum car rego payment, providing you keep a log book. Can anyone help me? :)
Thanks

Fab,

Welcome  ;D

I don't think this sort of problem is exclusive to Alfa's, about 6 months ago my '08 WRX did a water pump which in turn made the timing belt fail, bent valves blah blah.

In regards to cheap reg, this is the club permit scheme, not cheap reg!  Is the spider over 25 years old or a new one? There is a specific thread on here about club permits.

Thanks Phil for your reply. The Spider is a 2004 model. It has only done about 1000 kms since I bought it back in February.
I'll search for the thread regarding.

As the spider still has some time to go prior to qualifying for club plates, at least you could qualify now for cheaper insurance with LSV if you are a club member.

On the water pump issue, it is essential for belts to be replaced in a timely manner and with the deseil, the water pump is replaced along with it.

As Colin stated, a few engines are repaired on the cheap so make sure you get a properly repaired motor.

Overheating an engine is the worst thing you can do, the metal warps and goes out of shape, and goes soft, even if it doesn't go soft, you have to remachine everything flat and sqaure and round, better an engine from a wrecker, with known klms and warranty, thats what i would do anyway, [if it was cooked], if the cam belt had broken, just fix the engine, Colin.

Umm... Our 2.4 JTD rattles all the time, it's a diesel after all!

But the car is in for service, guess what they found?  Yep a leaking water pump, and the cam belt requires changing anyway.

Might have dodged a bullet this time.

Cheers
