147 GTA tyre advice

Hi all. I've seen a few threads about tyres for 147 GTAs, however as more kms get done people's opinion inevitably changes as they get more information.

Currently I've got Goodyear directionals that are from the last owner and they are wearing and getting noisy. Grip however is pretty good. As I don't want the noise etc I'm thinking of going asymmetric for my next tyre. Based on advice from users and mechanics/tyre specialists I'm getting conflicting advice so I've listed the main tyres I've had recommended to me.

1. Kumho KU39
2. Toyo T1sport
3. Pirelli Cinturato p7
4. Pirelli pzero rosso

I'm looking for something sporty that will also offer decent ride comfort and noise. Extra wear would be nice, but I don't do heaps of kms or thrash the car so if I can get >15 thousand kms I'll be happy.

Any advice? Pirelli seem to be the most common on this thread but a few tyre places have said the Japanese tyres suit the Australian conditions More.

Hi 155 lover,

The Michelin Pilot Sport 3 (PS3), was voted the best performance tyre in a tyre comparision last year.

By pure coincidence Im putting a set on my sister's car tomorrow and it runs the same size tyres at the front as the 147 GTA 225/45/17 and was
quoted as $224 per tyre from Bob Jane.

Guess you need to weigh up freight plus fitment costs if buying from O/S

Thanks for the advice. Spoke to a tyre power store near me and he reckons they don't carry the super sports anymore - they've been superseded by the pilot sport 3. He quoted $274 per tyre, but I haven't shopped around yet.

I haven't heard much about the toyo so I'm crossing that off my list.

He's wrong.  The Super Sports replaced the PS2 last year.  PS3 is a lower spec tyre.

I'm not trying to sound like a smart a..e.  I have the PSS on my 911, replacing the PS2's that the car came with.  The PSS is worth a second a lap at Phillip Island, is quieter and has a longer wear life.

Yes seems confusing, I originally thought that at it's launch the PS3 replaced the PS2, but not the case seems like the PS3 is new and a different tyre to PS2. PSS is listed on the Michelin website but not in the  size your after (225/45/17), so along with price may be best to source PSS from O/S. Link to Michie website attached

Ive heard good feedback from people using PS3, but depends what you're after, as PSS = ultra high performance tyre and PS3 = performance tyre

Agreed - you'd have thought PS3 would be higher spec than PS2 but then how long has Pirelli used the names P7 and PZero for what are essentially series of vastly different tyres.

Our X3 has Pzero Rosso's by the way.  19", by memory 235/45 on the front and 255/40 on the rear.  Off road be damned!

me three... big fan of pilot sports... have them on my 156 v6.

other top tyre is conti contact sport DW

other good ones out there too, but these two constantly come out tops without paying silly money.

I intended to buy the Pilot Super Sports locally, but the local tyre places said that they don't come in 17's to Australia. I had to go to tirerack to get them.

Quick one, how much was shipping from tire rack? They haven't responded to my query yet...also for those who have the super sports, are they relatively quiet and is the ride comfortable? They got rated highly in those things but it is a performance tyre so I'm sceptical....

I'm not a good person to ask - I don't have them on a 147 and the 911 is noisy and rides firm regardless!  Shipping was $250 a pair for 235/35/19 tyres. So not super cheap but still much better than buying locally.

I bought my Super Sports back in June 2011 from TireRack. Shipping cost US $249.
I'm very happy with the tires from a performance and every day practicality rating.

The test of the 4 maximum performance tyres had this to say about them:

Alright, decided to go with the pirelli p7 cinturato. Reviews and archive suggest it's quiet and comfortable while offering decent grip. Thanks for the help in this thread . I'll post my feedback once they're fitted in the next week or so.

I got the P7 Cinturato fitted in 225/45/17. My initial impressions are good. It is certainly very quiet and comfortable. Grip seems pretty good over the first few drives, although I wouldn't consider them an out and out sports tyre like the good year eagle directionals I had on earlier, or a Pzero/Pilot sports 2 and the like, so I'm very happy. It's been raining in Adelaide and the grip in the wet has been what surprised me most - seems very capable indeed. All in all I'm very happy - very comfortable & quiet, with good grip and pretty reasonable price @ $220 a tyre.

As an aside - I had the Koni FSDs fitted, along with new upper/lower control arms and I can't recommend them highly enough. They are worth every cent!
