Hi All

I have taken off the intake manifold to replace the carb mounts and now am putting things back together.
Should I use some sort of selastic on the new gasket or just use the gsket?
Both the surfaces are smooth and clean I'm just a little woried about the seal around the 4 water inlets
Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hey David,

Hope things are well.

Yes, thin film of silastic around the 4 water inlets, both sides of the gasket.  I just did same, and advice confirmed by my wonderful second family at Monza Motors.

Thanks Neil

All's well up here. I'm just in the process of replacing rubbers.
Did engine mounts a while ago but now doing gearbox mounts (front and rear) and rear engine mount. Had a bit of vibration in the tailshaft but the front gearbox mount seem to have sorted that.
When I was checking the vibration was fixed I noticed the front carb mount was stuffed, coughing out of the rubber.
Fix one thing and something else wants to be fixed
So have changed them all and given that side of the engine a good clean up, now to bolt it all back together.

How is the race car coming along?

Thanks again
David

If you're going to use a silicone sealant, use it sparingly.
Otherwise there's a chance that little hardened blobs may come loose and end up blocking water passages, jam under the thermostat etc.
I use non-hardening permatex aviation form-a-gasket for this sort of job - it has the added bonus of not destroying the gasket next time you take the manifold off.
I've re-used my L-Jet inlet gasket 4 times so far using this stuff.

Hi Festy

Yes I only use a very small smear just around the water galleries on both sides of the gasket.
All has sealed up well and engine runs smooth again.

Took the car for a very short run, the engine is now smooth but I still have my vibration in the tailshaft.
Happens at about 1500rpm smooth below and smooth above those revs.
Looks to be the centre support.

Hi David,

My Alfetta had the same issue, vibration at 1500 rpm, smooth at 1499 and 1501 rpm  :) (My tacho's not that accurate  ;)).  So it very well could be.

My centre donut had a chunk missing out of it and the centre support was cactus. There were cracks in the front and rear donuts as well.

In the end replaced all the donuts, centre support, centre bearing and had the tailshaft balanced + exhaust mounts = transformed car. Now for new engine mounts......

Cheers
