I know there's been a lot of discussion on this topic, but . . .
I'm about to rebuild the Alfetta transmission (+ clutch, rear brakes, prop shaft, etc.) and have been using Redline LW Shockproof, which I'm happy with. However, it's now getting very expensive.
Has anyone used the cheaper Nulon synthetic transaxle oil? How does it compare with the Redline?

Without knowing anything about the Nulon product I can say without a doubt it will not be in the same league as Redline.  That's not to say it's not any good but you get what you pay for. The Redline will use a far superior base stock. Don't place any trust in the term synthetic anymore because it hardly means anything now. I remember 10 years ago any sort of synthetic gear oil use to cost a fortune and nothing has changed other than what they can print on the bottle.

NULON products are very good, however, i only use their coolants, but i always use Penrite 80-90 Synthetic gearbox oil and it seems to work fine, no crunching in the cold, no stiffness in the shift 1st thing in the morning, its well priced, so you can dump it when it gets contaminated, with the expensive oils, you are a bit relunctant to change them, but there are Synthetics and Pretend Synthetics, read the labels closely, i reckon the reason they are getting cheaper, is because they are becomming more common, it used to be hard 20 years ago to buy it, and it had to be ordered in, now they are stocked at Repco, Colin.

Thanks Steve
I take your point about real synthetic oils - it's the base that makes the oil a full (real) synthetic.
Col, I use Penrite HPR syn for the engine & I'm happy with that.
Still, I think I'll stay with the Redline, even though it will cost $118 US gal: I know it's good and it comes with all sorts of recommendations from other owners.
BTW I've imported a Sachs clutch kit for about $230 - a bit better than some local prices!
