Hello everyone - I'm hoping someone can help us. My daughter has an 2004 Alfa 147 Twin Spark manual which has done approx. 140,000-150,000 Kms. It broke down last night and was towed to a mechanic in Byron Bay. He has told her that it's probably the timing belt gone and he can't fix it. We live on the Gold Coast and will be getting it towed back up here but he told her if it was a normal car it would probably cost around $1300-$1500 to fix but with it being an Alfa it's more than likely to cost a heap more. She is wondering if it's worth getting fixed - she's a uni student and can't afford it. The debate now is what would she get for it without getting it fixed and what she would get for it if she was to get it fixed. She loves her little car but she's over paying so much more for parts and servicing. Any suggestions on any of the above would be most greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Steve S

You need to know for sure if it is the timing belt or not.

If you get it fixed it's worth the market value, whatever that is (we cant say as we know nothing about the car). There is a big risk buying a car with a broken cambelt. But if you dont want the car I would sell it as is

If it is the timing belt, you could look at a second hand engine, could be cheaper and get a new belt put on it. there is a heap of guys in syd who can do this, would save on the cost to tow it back to qld.
