Hello Joelalfa, EGR valve, swirl valve, blocked particle filter, clogged up manifold, take your pick, take it to an Alfa Romeo Service provider who work on these cars all the time, Colin.

Should this really be happening it as 35,000 km on it or is this a common thing?

It will depend on the type of trips you do.

From what I know, short trips are no good, as some of the stuff Colcol mentioned will get blocked up.

You need to take it for an 'ALFA ROMEO TUNE', that is a good run along the freeway, so that the particle filter can get hot and burn off all the soot, these problems are common to all diesels, not just Alfa Romeo's, Colin.
