Title: My 1985 Alfa 33 1.5
Post by: jorritkooistra on November 15, 2015, 09:53:50 PM
Dear fellow Alfa enthousiasts,

Today I bought the 5th Alfa in my Alfa career. A 1985 Alfa 33 1.5. All original. With books and service coupons. Car has been in storage for the last 17 years. So clearly i have some maintenance today. First thing that broke today is im assuming the master brake cilinder. Put my foot down and went straight trough the floor. Im a mechanic by trade, so all mechanicamechanical componants shall be rebuilt or replaced where neccesary. My plan is to get the car back into perfect mechanical condition. And after thats all done, its time to carve up a mountain. Back in Holland(where i come from) i still have many spare parts, including carbies and some race spec. cams. So the engine should do a little more then standard.

As you can see, the body is very solid. Only one small spot on the roof. But maybe i'll find some rust hidden in this 1985 treasure.

Before you do anything, change the timing belts, should be done after 60,000 klms and 3-4 years, not 17 years, check the bottom of the hatch glass at the edges for ever present rust, but it is 30 years old, one year younger than mine, Colin.

Yeah i know. Im a mechanic by trade. Might pull the engine out and do everything at once. Gaskets, fluids, seals, belts. Because i can bet on it that the front and rear main or going to leak iff i dont do them...

So far, so average... Found a lot of shit im the cooling system. I need all hoses in the engine bay. Everything has gone hard. But i was expecting that. A few pics, for your entertainment.

Gearbox is nice and clean again. Was covered in oil and mud. Its also time for a gear-selector seal. Because that was leaking just sitting on the bench. Resealed the sump and other parts as well. Quite a bit of muck in there, just cleaned it all out and see in what state she is after I drive it.

Bigger calipers are in as well. Just waiting for discs now. They fill the 15" rim completely. So im expecting some decent stopping power.

Teflon bushing for the gearbox, crisp and precise shifting it is. Dont know how it will behave when its in the car.

I am wanting to upgrade the brakes on my 33. Are you able to provide details? Also what and how did you find the 15 inch rims?
Title: Re: My 1985 Alfa 33 1.5
Post by: jorritkooistra on April 09, 2016, 07:36:39 AM
I had a set in holland, and imported them with some semi slicks. I have a second set of 15 inch wheels that i found on gumtree. But that was a present from the misses, so there is no way i could sell those hahaah. You just have to be lucky i gues. Or find rims from a mito.

Brake wise, I use saab 900 calipers with alfa 155V6 discs. Brakes realy good, have it on my other 33 as well. 1 draw back, it weighs a million kilos. Calipers from a holden commodore(dual piston, 290mm disc) will fit as well. But they are +/-2mm to high. So they wont cover the whole disc. But those are alloy calipers and weigh less then the original alfa 33 calipers. It would be possible to make slots in the bracket so you can slide it down 2mm, but i wouldnt recommend it. Im using the saab calipers, because its a straight bolton, no washers or machining. Grabs the disc perfectly and works wonders for the alfa. Only thing you need is a set of costum brake hoses. But the mobile hose doctors can hook you up with that no problem

Might change the pads to bendix, becauae i think this is one of the cheaper brand that is going to destroy the disc.

Lightweight flywheel and sporty clutch are in as well. Plate has different material on it, and tje pressure plate has dual springs, so the clutch might feel a lot heavier.

Also waiting for wheelcylinders at the moment, and i need to order a rear brake hose...

The alfa has driven under its own power for the first time in 20 years. Best 10 meters ever 😂

Now waiting for the springs to settle and see how it looks. I might need to get some springseats from an alfa sud to lower it more. I read somewhere they are a little lower then the 33 ones.

Good work Jorri, i notice you have 'sports' air cleaners, similar to my 33, i did it for better under bonnet cooling, that big rectangular air cleaner box sure does restrict airflow under bonnet from the hot air out of the radiator to the back of the engine bay, only problem with those sporty aircleaners, is that the carbs injest a lot of hot air, unlike the aircleaner from the factory can pickup cold air from the front of the car.
So much easier to work on the car without a bonnet, if mine was a racecar, i would get rid of the hinges and use 4 bonnet pins so the bonnet could be removed pronto.
The radiators for these now are cheap, it seems that after about 45 years of manufacture, the tooling has been paid for many times over.
Keep up the good work with the 33, Colin.

Yeah when the exhaust is done, im hear wrapping the manifold all the way until the gearbox. That would eliminate a little bit of the heat. Second step would be fitting a cold air feed hose to the airfilters. But that is something for later on.

Havent been able to find a radiator yet, so i think overseas will have to be the way for me....
