Correct...there are 3 tailshaft rubber couplings plus another centre mount which the name escapes me at the moment.
Do not quote me on this but I think all 3 have slight differences, for front centre and rear. Maybe someone else can clarify on this!

Hi Guys,

I'll chime in here to say that Domenic is correct, the three couplings are all different and, as well, there are different sorts of tail shaft to transaxle couplings too. The later ones are different to the early ones and I don't think they are interchangable.

Just to complicate things a bit more, the other thing Domenic mentioned is the centre bearing. This is also subject to wear and may also need replacing.

Drew, are you looking to do it yourself or taking it somewhere. If you are going to do it yourself, you might need to take the shaft out and make sure you get the correct rear coupling, if that's the one that needs replacing.

If you want to get it done there are several well known Alfa specialists in Adelaide who will be able to do the job.

Feel free to email me or call if you want to discuss further.

When you get the new exhaust fitted, I'd strongly recommend having flange joints installed instead of any slip joints, and also consider adding a flex section at the front where it goes two into one.   The flex will unload some of the stresses on the exhaust, and the gasketed flange joints make it easy to drop the exhaust to do maintenance on the propshaft, gearshift etc.  Those slip joints make underside maintenance an absolute PITA if you need to drop the exhaust.

Yes Drew, I've had a couple of cars standard exhausts so 'modified'.   Actually it's probably easier doing it to a pre-installed exhaust as you know that everything is routed and orientated correctly, so the exhaust shop just leaves everything in the same alignment and modifies the connections.  Alfetta exhausts can be touchy when it comes to alignment (hitting the floor, propshaft, rear axle etc), and even installing the mufflers themselves slightly forward or aft can alter the drone of the exhaust inside the car.

Flange connections use a fixed flange at one end (welded) and a floating connection the other with a fibrous gasket clamped in between.  You can get the gaskets almost anywhere.

If you've ever had to change a driveshaft donut without the aid of a hoist, you'll know how physically hard it is to separate the exhaust, get it out of the way, and change the donuts, then reassemble it all with limited access underneath, all the while in a half-situp position!!!!!!!!!!!  I hated it when I was young and fit, now I'd probably pay someone else to do it, or at least get access to a hoist.
