Hi All, when I moved from VIC to QLD about 500k out of Rockhampton I lost 4th, it would skip straight to 5 on upshift and to 3 on downshift after thinking for a few seconds, I ran an EOL and it fixed it. That was about 3 months ago and the car has done less than 1000, since.

Yesterday I had to drive a few hours to get fuel for the generator and again lost 4th in the exact same way, this time it would sometimes engage and sometimes not, at one stage it engaged 4th but revved like it was in neutral.

I ran an EOL and again 4th is back working fine.

Any idea's what this may be? Gearbox is running Royal purple Gearmax, should I swap it out for something else? would some Nulon Gearbox treatment work? or could it be a selespeed sensor? no error codes and clutch rod is at 28.19. I fear my synchros may be going on 4th.

i find these go out of alignment and sometimes fail. I've had a couple fail due to loss of electrics (bad battery terminal - since replaced) but from time to time they need the EOL to keep them in full alignment.

thanks, I suspected one of those sensors. So which one do I replace and is there anything special nedded other than EOL?

I think someone told me the 156 Selespeed has 3 of these sensors, the GTA has 2. I've never had one go on my 156, only on the GTA. so I'm not sure which one I'd replace on the 156. Certainly keep the one you take off in case you get it wrong and want to swap them around until you get it right. I'm also told there is a trick to fitting them, you need to half turn them so the potentiometer (spring) is under load before securing them. Then run an EOL and all should be good.

Kulwinder

Kulwinder, its the End Of Line calibration. Its a sequence you can run when using the MES (MultiEcuScan) software & cable to do a calibration on the car (in this case the gearbox).

Worth noting I did lose 4th shortly after getting the car and it was swarf. But the symptoms were different in that the display would show 4 then skip. At present the display will not even show 4. If I upshift from 3 it waits and goes to 5. If I downshift from 5 to 4 it waits and stays on 5. I need to double shift to go down to 3.

Hopefully it also fixes the random not selecting 1st when stopping too.

jimay3677

4th has come back by itself. Must be sensor related.

jimay3677

Can anyone point me towards guide for replacing these sensors?
I've hear you need to 1/4 turn it before tightening, clockwise or anti-clockwise?
I'll be doing the rear one to begin with, anyone know how hard it is to get at?

Thanks.

Ended up not being the sensor. It was metal fragments again.
