i have a 1985 alfa romeo 33 (pininfarina 4x4) sportswagon giardinetta.... it's red or maroon over black, will be posting a photo of it as soon as i can, and i need help with finding some more info about it... i'v done some searching and found nothing.. it's a car i'd like to restore because of the centimental value it hold's after buying it off my mate's dad after my mate died in a car accident, he owned it and planned on doing it up, i would really apreciate any help from anyone who has inforation about it, or can point me in the right direction to find out as much as i can about this car... also do all small alfa's come with V4 engine's?

Hi there, hopefully someone from the 33s and Suds section of the forum will be able to give you plenty advice on the 33 wagons. 

Just one thing FYI, all suds, sud sprints and 33s have a boxer engine.  That is in essance similar to what you get in Subarus and also many BMW motor bikes.  So I am not sure if it is technically correct to call the motor a V4, however, I stand corrected if this is not so.

The original suds had a 1.1 - 1.3 motor (I can't quite recall) then they came out with a 1.5 as per the TI, the sprint and I think possibly early 33s.  They further upgraded this to a 1.7 and the last of the 33s came out with a 4valve per cylinder head.  They if I am correct are seen as the nicest motors.  Again I might be not correct, as I am not so familiar with these cars. 

In comparison, the "run of mill" classic Alfas prior to the suds, 33s etc (eg. the 105s coupes, spiders and sedans) and 116s (Alfettas) were powered by the long lived all alloy Twin Cam motor (1.3, 1.6, 1750, 1.8 and 2.0L) The GTV6 obviously has the V6 in either 2.5 or 3.0L.  Later model Alfas including 75s had the twin spark twin cam or V6 while the 90, 164 in Australia only received the V6.  Later model Alfas including the 156, spider, coupe, GT and Brera came with various versions of the twin spark and more recently JTS Twin Cam as well as the 3.0L or 3.2L quad cam V6.  The 159 also gets these motors as well as the turbo diesel.   

If you go back before the 105s (eg. early 101 giulias and giuliettas, 2600s) etc, these were powered by a range of motors.  The 2600 coupe for instance by a 2.6 all alloy twin cam with triple webbers. The others by earlier versions of the 105 motor.  Then of course there is the Montreal which had a 2.3 - 2.5 ?? quad cam V8 and more recently the new Alfa 8C Competizione which also has a V8, but I am not aware of the specs of this motor, albeit it is gorgeous.

From memory the 33 wagon is all wheel drive rather than 4wd.  My brother has had a couple of them.  Like all Italian cars of this period, they can suffer from rust, let alone problems with suspension, and electricals.  For the time, they were a great little wagon with many additional nice features including power windows etc.  As to the availability of spares for these cars, most mechanicals should probably be still available, refer to the club sponsors page, but panels and trim I would suspect only available from wrecks.  Milano Spares in Melbourne might be able to help, but I would have thought that there may be others.  Also ebay and possibly some of the specialist part suppliers in the UK or Europe.  Goodluck.  Cheers Dave

Youre mst welcome mate.  Sorry I can't be of more specific help but to date I havn't yet owned a Sud or 33, though have drive them.  I alo forgot to mention that other small Alfa, the 147. These also come with the 2L twin spark, possibly also the JTS twin cam and as well, the GTA version with the 3.2L quad cam V6.

I just had a quick look on the 33 and suds listing on this forum.  There are a number of threads re 33s.  I also forgot to mention, I think that my brother might even still have a 33 wagon (wrecked) so let me know if you are hunting for a part and I can make some enquiries for you. 

The forum is such a good means of finding out info and communicating with other Alfisti. I also forgot to mention that most States around Aus have Alfa clubs and in the magazines they usually have a classified section. This also can be a good source for spares.  Most clubs post these on-line.  Cheers Dave
