Hi there,

Have got an Alfa 147 with 10000k. Last service was when it was 3000k, which was about a year and a half ago. The dealership says that I should do then a 2 years service which is a major service which happens to cost like $800 (I think it is a 20000k). I think it is quite too much. They explained that the service should not be dome by Km but by the time. According to them, all the fluids deteriorate rapidly, which sort of makes sense in a way but I still think they are exaggerating quite a bit.

Would appreciate some light with this issue as I do not want to be robed by the dealership if that is the case. What is the normal/typical think to do?

The cars are actually not necessarily expensive but do need servicing.  Time not Kms is a valid issue but who ever told you this has no idea about Alfa service.  The books say 20,000kms for a service but about 10,000kms is better if you have a lot of use and reliance on car.  Any car costs money to be maintained and it all adds up.  Also, things need replacing when they wear out ( and then there is labour costs to fit) so a lube job costs less than a full service and safety check.

Money has to be spent now or the car will deteriorate. Belt needs changing every 60,000 kms or 3 years, the variator may need changing, pads & disks are probably due for replacement.  You fix things when they need fixing.  These selespeed may need resetting.  Do not forget replacement of the twin spark plugs.

These can be done at an Alfa Specialist much cheaper than a dealer with genuine parts or after marketparts.  Please be mindful that to reset the selespeed you will probably need to have it done at a workshop with the factory Alfa diagnostic equipment.

John thanks for that... Very helpful info... Specially for me that I am new to alfa romeo...

Took it to Zagame at the end and as thought an arm and a leg. Next time I will take it to an Alfa specialist better.
