Alfa 33 oil filter - $38 bucks!?

Hi Guys


was trying to do my first service after buying a little 33 boxer, but no shops had a Z421 oil filter


autobarn told me they could order one but it was $38 bucks !?

is this normal?


while im asking about filters, i cant find my fuel filter? is it close to the tank or in the engine bay.. and i cant find a part number for one either

Yes, thats the correct Ryco one with a valve to hold the oil in filter after stopping, ready for start up. Sounds steep to me, maybe they're charging freight as well....Autobarn can do that....

Price one at Repco or elsewhere before paying that!

UFI Filter, 23 169 00, fit all boxers, can get for about $20 on ebay, or good alfa suppliers...

Firstly, if carby model, then could be anywhere. Owners manuals for Suds and 33's dont have them at all, for carby models.
Mine, Ryco Z14, or generic equivalent 5 / 16 or 8mm, is between mechanical fuel pump and inlet to fuel bowl on LHS carby. Have seen them in Left wheel arch, 6" out from fuel tank too!

Handy Hint: Twin webers Boxers have a large brass nut (17mm?) beneath fuel bowl entry pipes that holds a small plastic thimble mesh filter (if its not been removed that is...)  Check these both, (though the left one cops the fuel first) too as they can be chokers with really fine sediment that's gotten through all the other filters. If they're there too!

sorry i should have been more specific i have a 16v which looks to be EFI

i'll have another look for the fuel filter in the rear wheel arches

and yeah, i will ring repco on monday and ask for their price

Oh ! 16v are a different beast all together!  Oil filter info stands. Fuel filter is on base of firewall behind left hand head. High pressure unit cos fuel injection.

Check all high pressure fuel hoses in the engine bay and replace, particularly the ones heading around the engine/heads. They have a rep for starting fires if they let go! For the sake of a few bucks of hose.....

Yes, the original oil filters are around $40, and there are very good reasons for this. The use of a higher temperature element being one. I change my filter and oil very often on the road sprint, and use a Z89A or equivalent filter for under $10. Although you must be aware that if you use cheap parts you get poor results. Cheap filters equal knocking on initial start up.

Petrol filter is in the engine bay in bracket at the bottom of fire wall, passenger side.  Not sure about the part number for a cheap replacement fuel filter? Maybe someone else ? I have never had a 16v daily driver. I'd remove it and try to match it with a cheapy at Repco or I even go to Supercheap Autos because they have a wall of filters that you can compare and match with. Careful with the plastic fuel hoses, Philpot is correct about fire issues.

i was worried that was the fuel filter, its a silver thing that connects via two banjo's... doesn't look cheap!

i've acutally got the spider-plenum off at the moment replacing a coolant hose so i'll have a look at the fuel lines

Try imparts for the fuel filters, if you can match the fittings with something a little more 'conventional' they are often cheaper. Their list price for Peugeot ones is about $50 more than volvo, despite having the same part number.....

$50 more?!? im used to paying $17 for a fuel filter

rung imparts they "dont do alfas" so i'll have to go lookup a place that could get me these things



are UFI oil filters better than Ryco? i can see a supplier on ebay selling them for under $20 posted

Hey Spoynter,

I had a 33 16 valve before and never paid $40-50 bucks for an oil filter. For that prce i used to get 2 and change left over!!!

Do yourself a favour and go to an alfa spares place in QLD or mechanic they most likely will have one. What you got quoted on for a filter is a joke. In my 33 16valve i have used the UFI style and Tecnocar filter before and found them to be very good. Like it was mentioned before the important thing is that it has the valve in the right position in the filter and you should be fine. Fuel filters are more expensive but are readily available if you go to the right place.

Try Milano Spares 9462 2138 here in Victoria if you cant find anything in QLD. Best to order a few oil filters to have some spare at home especially if they are hard to find in your area and by doing so you can save on the postage cost.

looked on the UFI site and ended up with part number 31.511.00 or 3151100 for the fuel filter

one was for sale on ebay so i ordered it for about $28 delivered

might order a UFI oil filter too and compare it to the ryco im picking up

Man only change what needs changing. If it looks good with no cracks or tears why do you want to change it? BTW if you needed to change some fuel lines pretty sure if you get the right size you can use any fuel hose and it doesn't need to be original. From experience i have NEVER had any problems with things like that in any alfa.

You are doing a full service so just put new oil filter, fuel filter (if you want), fresh oil and coolant, maybe fresh gearbox oil and you should be right. Later on you can do the timing belt if you have a record its been done recently or better still do that ASAP if you don't know. This is the most critical thing.

i wanted to change the fuel hoses because these guys said they cause engine fires maybe i should just keep an eye on them

the timing belt was done recently.. apparently (someone has written with a marker "belt done at 185,000")

my gears are actually quite hard to shift, 1st crunches if i dont engage it slowly.. probably wouldnt hurt to change the oil



i have this other nasty problem of a split CV boot, but my size 36 socket won't fit in the small wheel hub space... might see if i can find a "skinny" 36 socket, even then the nut is all rusty and its going to be a messy job! almost worth palming off to a workshop

I think you misunderstood my post.
-No, imparts do not do alfa.
-If you cross reference the bosch part number for the fuel filter, you will most likely find that it is shared with other European cars.
-Imparts has more markup on Peugeot listed parts than Volvo listed parts.

No idea about oil filters, I've never owned a 33.

Was just tyring to give the benefit of the same advice I'd received about the plastic fuel hoses that I was given by more than one alfa specialist with over 100 years of experience between them. When 'These Guys' talk, I listen...

The term was 'rep' or 'reputation' for potentially cracking.

'May'. 'Possibly'. 'Can'. 'If' they get brittle and fracture. 'If' they've never been replaced in the life of the car. If I must frame my words much more precisely...

This advice was specific to the 33 16V, and not to other model alfas. Like the ones that I've owned over the past 26 years. And no, AR116, I've never had a problem with them either. Didn't mean I didn't change the plastic lines when I got my 16v.....

Haven't won tattslotto either....but I have bought tickets.
