Hi All,

I need some clarification/comments please.

In my quest to come up with a decent step nose I recently purchased a dismantled 1967 Silver GT Sprint Veloce with the intention of restoring it. I know some of you may know this car as I have seen it mentioned on the forum recently, let's say it came from a renowned Alfa expert out Windsor way here in Sydney. I have attached some photos and I guess my wife is right at present to say "it isn't pretty".

I sent the numbers for the car to Centro Documenatazione but Marco's intial answer is it "didn't appear correct". I double checked physically and the numbers are right.....I don't have access to detailed reference books but did find something on a register on the web that listed some Aussie GT Sprint's Veloce that are close in sequence to this one and are from the same year(s). Is there anyone out there that can confirm details? Chassis number is AR 299 831, Engine number is AR00536*14105.

Next question is where to start and how far does one go?.......not sure I am actually asking everyone or asking myself here. My goal is to end up with a very nice car, inital indications reveal the costs will far exceed the value of the car at present (I know, what's new?). However having just come back from Europe and visiting Technoclassica good 105's generally seem higher priced in Europe and there is more of them of course - as to whether they are being sold at these prices I don't know.  In the U.S the story about prices seems similar not sure how many they got/have.

Having said all that decent step noses rarely seem to come up for sale here and when they do they go quickly.....I know everyones version of decent may vary here - so to clarify maybe I am looking for an excellent but not necessarily a conourse car, I'd like to use it.

Love to hear opinions, experiences, suggestions...

Hi E,

Nice to see that another one surfaced! That particular car should be saved as it is a GT Veloce and it's complete and pretty much undamaged (from pics I saw)- it will be worth more in value than your GTj when restored as well. You need to find out what is under the paint - though Mr M would have ensured it had everything together.

Derek is the master with chassis numbers and will actually appreciate adding your details to the register.

Be prepared to spend the bucks though if you do two of them properly, and probably put 30% of your total spend aside to keep the wife at bay.  ;D

These stepnose's are only appreciating in value - and somewhat quickly for a good complete example.

I for one look forward to seeing either of your resto projects kicked off.

Note - depending on what you want to achieve; be sure though of what you buy for these cars, there is a LOT of differing quality items out there from panels to coachwork to lighting. Regardless of what anyone says NOS/OEM is where it's at for a proper headache free build - repro/replica is NOT the same and in many instances less than acceptable in fit and finish. I'm more than happy to help with any info you might need.

Another great stepfront GTV purchase, congrats!  Nothing wrong with the chassis number. You're chassis number is 11 after Sam's from Tassie (Sam the Chemist on this forum). Engine number is fine too. My guess is it will be a Nov 1967 build date. Looks like it is quite original with correct engine, brake reservoir, steering wheel, dash(take car of it, its delicate!), bumpers etc. even the carpet looks original. Got better pics of the seats? They are definitely appreciating although bargains can still be had from what I can see. I think the best bet to see what you are up for is to strip the paint, and lift the carpets. I reckon once the bodywork is sorted it is pretty smooth sailing as all the running gear is easy to restore/upgrade etc. In terms of a road registered car there aint much below $15K but a well restored/concours one would go for $40K+. In the long run it will hold more value than a stepfront Junior as well.

I can send you a link to a pdf of my parts manual that I scanned and other bits if you need too.

Congrats on the purchase  8)

Chassis numbers at this time were a bit funny, Derek actually spotted this with my 2 stepnose cars;

298424 - Manufactured October '67
298732 - Manufactured November '66

So the earlier number was manufactured later......

Have to agree with all said here, nice find.  Now if only I too could find a bargain one, I would find a way of stashing it away, even if I have already sufficient projects.

I live in hope.

Yep they didn't come off the line sequentially but your 298424 was way off! Full of special prototype parts maybe?! :P

Ezee, maybe you and the other GTV owners could add your cars to my website with a pic or two. Phil, Sam etc. have already done so. I could then group all the stepfront GT Veloces together.

Hi Guys,

thanks for the swift replies - it does help me get my head around it all. I am glad to hear the numbers are right. Wife is actually supportive of these things so I should be ok in that department.

Now remember I wont be doing the actual work myself but using NOS parts will be my instructions to whoever does and the first stop is the newly opened web shop we all know about :) I had a mate actually use it btw and he raved about the product and service so well done!

I have a few people in mind to do the work, I want to ensure it comes together correctly so will be careful on how I approach it.

As for a bargain David....not sure I got a bargain per se but got all the bits

I have the Duetto to start as well not sure if i have posted pics of this on here before..?

Here are a few more shots.........I will gladly add it to your site Derek...will try it today if I have time.

Cheers

Congratulations Emmanuel! I reckon this one was a good buy, I ummed and ahhed a lot over it, spent hours on the phone with Tony who very kindly mailed a USB stick full of photos and spreadsheets of parts, even a little video, what a guy! Only passed it up due to my non garage status.

Great to see another one being saved. Looking forward to sharing the journey with you.

No you haven't ... Sort that out tonight !  ;D

The collection of imported repair panels and OEM bits I have accumulated has now exceeded any fiscal sensibility.. Be interested to follow your journey if only to lend mine some credibility

Beautiful! I'd love a Duetto!

I didn't know the ashtray / lighter setup was the same as Sprint GT's ?

Nice score, I love those seats, I find them much nicer looking than my 2000 versions
