Can anyone tell me the significance of the n and the s on the engine mounts? I assume it is not related to left and right.

North and south ? Why car are they for ? If it's for a 116 the drivers side has the extra thread for the starter motor mount

Well if you may have mistaken the 'n' for a 'D' then it may well be left & right:
D for Destra = Right HS
S for Sinistra = Left HS

Not sure if this may help?

It's for a 2.0 litre Alfetta GTV and I have a number of mounts, some with N and some with S embossed on the rubber and am having trouble putting the engine back in the car. When I line up one side the other is too high to bolt to  the car body.  I wasn't sure if some of the mounts might be thicker / stiffer than others.

Definitely an N on some S on the others.

The two mounts are different, intake side has a different cut out for the starter motor mount as mentioned.  Oh, you should use the starter motor mount, otherwise the starter motor cracks and breaks.

Hope this helps.

As to N vs S, I always wondered too.  The great mystery.

Hi Craig

I had trouble installing my engine again recently too. I put it down to the new mounts being larger than in previous times when I had used the old mounts. I had to play with it quite a bit but once I got there it torqued down fine.

As to the letters - I have no idea, but they are definitely not swappable from side to side.

Cheers
Julian

S = Scarico = Exhaust (side)  ???
N = nnnn no, this one's got me  = Intake (side)  :-\

I'm pretty sure what Craig is referring to is two of the same, left or right with the N or the S stamped into the rubber. I.e 2 drivers side mounts, one with N and the other with S.

I got the engine in with a bit of jiggling. I guess it was a case of letting the rubber compress evenly as it went down.  So N and S was probably not relevant to the exercise, just one of those mysteries.

Craig, does the rubber seem to be of a differing density. When I was trying to riddle your question I though I came across a mount described as 'normale', I can't find it now (of course), but I wonder if the S described a harder 'sports' mount?
