I have decided to keep my GTV6 and attempt to bring her back to her former glory. Hasn't gone well so far. I dropped the car into the exhaust centre for a new exhaust and had a phone call 2 hours later saying a small fire started under the bonnet and there is petrol soaking the carpet. Not very happy and sound a bit suss to me. Supposedly only a few wires and accelerator cable have been damaged. Will report back when I actually see it.

Mmm bugger - not an auspicious start...
'83 GTV6 - 3.0 is in! Ohhh yeah!
'99 156 T-spark - Formula 98 ready!

What do people do with their old 2.5...?

Cool Jesus

Its almost like the amityville horror whispers, 'get out'.
Yeah it does sound odd, what's fuel doing getting into the cabin? Sounds like a wayward oxy torch near the firewall or under the floor pan...

The fuel vapour return hose from the oil separator is a hard plastic tube and goes inside the cabin. Although I think it goes mostly down the Drivers side. Hard to imagine how you would get enough petrol in it to "Soak the carpet", but it is part of the fuel system.

My car had a few missing or out of place seals in the firewall and the rubber high pressure rubber fuel lines sort of pass near the fire wall before going under the car. If it was a wayward oxytorch that split a line it could've squirted at one of those and into the cabin. From memory the pressure return line passes closest to the accelerator cable.

I'd be having a damned good look in the engine bay and under the car when you get it back.

Good luck.
AL.

Have my car back not sure what they were talking about with the fuel in the car as it seems fine to me apart from a slight fuel smell. Maybe a misunderstanding. Car sounds a lot quieter but still has the nice sound when revving. They paid for the repairs for the fire damage as it was a oxy torch that started the fire. Car drives a lot better just from having the accelerator cable renewed and tightened. Just happy to have it back.
