hi all just wondering if anyone has used the after market synchros for the alfetta gtvs? are they better than original? or is it better to source original ones from italy? any advice appreciated!

Like Suds and 33's, this is a high wear area on Alfa Romeo's, you can buy a 'heavy duty' synchro that costs about $15 extra, they have a yellow or red paint band on them, i always get the 'heavy duty' synchros, but i don't beleive they last any longer, i tried to get some from all over the world and couldn't find any, but found some at a Alfa Romeo spare parts place in Victoria...... take that online shopping!

The current batch of new synchros for transaxle gearboxes are rubbish.  The best thing to use at the moment are the 'least buggered' second hand ones.

As strange as it may seem, the 'softer' the synchro ring is the better it works at speeding up and synchronising the gear, but it wears out quicker, the 'harder' the synchro is the more it slips and you get that 'crunch' on the gear change, but it lasts longer, heel and toe on down changes, and take it easier on the upshift, Colin.

The current new available syncros are fine on road cars, only on race cars do the syncros start to play up or should that be not play. Seems that the issue is heat related and the road boxes dont generate enough heat to be a problem.

When you are driving on the road, you seldom need to change down or up quickly, in a race car, things happen lots quicker, and when you are chasing another car on the track, you are much more brutal, try running some good synthetic gearbox oil, it certainly helps when the box is cold and extremely hot, Colin.
